Shoulder pain (bursitis)

The shoulder is a complex joint where tendons normally slide freely between the top of the humerus (arm) and the acromion (tip of the shoulder). Bursas are fluid filled sacs that act as cushions to prevent friction between soft tissue structures and bony surfaces. One of the largest bursa's in the body is the subscapula bursa which is located in the gap between the humerus and acromion.  Inflammation of this bursa may cause pain.

Common symptoms for shoulder bursitis

- Pain with shoulder movement
- Difficulty sleeping on affected side
- Weakness with shoulder movement (especially raising arm sideways)
- Tenderness when pressing into the joint area

Treatment

Treatment of shoulder bursitis usually involves reduction of inflammation and a rehabilitation programme which is focused on shoulder stabilisation to protect the bursa from irritation.
