Shoulder pain (impingement)

The shoulder is a complex joint where tendons normally slide freely between the top of the humerus (arm) and the acromion  (tip of the shoulder). Impingement simply means that the structures passing through this gap are being compressed or irritated in some way. One of the shoulder muscles that pass through this gap is supraspinatus. Impingement of the supraspinatus muscle tendon is what causes pain.

Common symptoms for shoulder impingement

- Pain with shoulder movement
- Weakness with shoulder movement (especially raising arm sideways)
- Reduced range of movement

Treatment

Treatment of shoulder impingement must focus on removing the irritation from the muscle tendon. The irritation is usually as a result of shoulder instability and weakness so treatment should assess and correct these factors.
