Back pain & treatment

common back pain injuries that we treat

Treatment of back pain usually consists of joint mobilisations, sports massage and rehabilitation exercises

Pain in the back

Bulging disc
Back pain
Bulging discs are a source of back pain
that can also cause pain, pins and needle or
numbness into the legs.

Many people that suffer back pain immediately
jump to the conclusion that the pain is
due to a bulging disc. Bulging discs are not
as common as what you may think.

However, when they do occur then pain is
quite often severe and may require complete
rest in the early stages.

Treatment should be aimed at reducing the
pressure off the disc and surrounding nerves.

Once this has been achieved then treatment
should focus on strengthening the core muscles
around the spine, mobilising the spinal joints
and reducing the spasm located within the muscle.

Trapped nerves

Trapped nerves

Trapping nerves in the back is often caused
by a locking of the joints. They can also be due
to tight muscle pressing on the nerve.

Pain can often start in the back and travel
up and down the legs. Pins and needles, a
numbness feeling and muscle weakness may
also be present.

With all trapped nerves, treatment is aimed
at removing the compression. Treatment
is relatively quick and is similar to the treatment
of locked joints. It may require soft tissue
massage, joint mobilisations and/or rehab
exercises.

Treatment should also look at why the
injury happened in the first place and
correct any pre-disposing factors.

Muscle Spasm
Back pain

Muscle spasm can often be a cause of back
pain. Muscle spasm usually occurs as a result
of trauma.

Muscles going to spasm is a protective mechanism
by the body. It prevents someone from going into
a position which the body perceives as potentially
painful.

Muscles usually spasm after suffering an injury
or sharp sudden force.

Treatment is aimed at reducing the spasm usually
with the aid of deep tissue massage.

Lower back pain treatment in Salisbury

Low back pain is one of the most common injuries we deal with, this is how we treat it

What is lower back pain?

Low back pain
Lower back pain is usually categorized into either non-specific or specific back pain. Non-specific low back pain is what the majority of people suffer with, and is what we deal with the most. It is usually an episode of back pain that is not necessarily clear as to what the actual cause is. For example there is no pathological disease or particular problem such as a fracture. However, this pain can range from mild to severe.
So if there is no particular problem, why is the pain there
The majority of low back pain is due to a combination of factors. These will usually involve…

1 – Poor muscle control
2 – Stiff spinal joints
3 – Tightness in surrounding muscles
4 – Trapped nerves
5 – Muscle weakness

Assessment of the lower back will usually reveal one or more of the above factors. This is where we target our treatment.

Symptoms

Symptoms of lower back pain vary dramatically. One individual can report to the clinic with a dull aching in the lower back that gets worse with long periods of sitting. Others can report with severe shooting pain with movement. There can be pins and needles present, pain that travels into the buttocks and down the legs, a numbness sensation or pain that is only present in one particular position. It doesn’t matter from our point of view, the treatment always focuses on the problems we find during assessment.

Treatment that works

Our treatment works by targeting the causing factors. Simply taking painkillers prescribe by your GP will only mask the symptoms and create a recurrence of back pain episodes. Our approach is simple…

1 – Treat the muscle
2 – Treat the joint
3 – Treat the nerve
4 – Improve muscle control

We use this process almost every time we treat any condition, not just back pain. It is a process that tackles the underlying cause. Soft tissue massage will target tight muscles, joint mobilisations will target the stiff joints, nerve stretches will improve nerve flexibility and our rehab program targets muscle control and core stability.

Soft tissue massage – targets tight muscles
Joint mobilisations – targets stiff spinal joints
Nerve stretches – improves nerve flexibility
Rehabilitation – improves muscle control, co-ordination and strength

The result is a pain-free lower back

Our treatment approach to non-specific lower back pain regularly sees long lasting results with our clients and sets us apart from other clinics.

Specific low back pain

Specific low back pain examples include osteoarthritis of the spine, tumours, infections, diseases.
