Pain at the wrist joint
Carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome classically causes pain on
the front of the wrist and hand.
The cause is usually due to compression of the
median nerve in the wrist. The median nerve is
one of the nerves which supplies the hand. It
passes through the wrist in a narrow channel formed
between bone and soft connective tissue called the
carpal tunnel.
Symptoms can include
- A dull ache in the wrist and forearm
- Pain which radiates into the thumb and four fingers
- Sensations of tingling or burning in the hand or four fingers
- Pain which is worse at night
- Radiating pain into the forearm, elbow or shoulder
- Pain and weakness with gripping
Treatment is aimed at enlarging the space within the carpal tunnel. This maybe through soft tissue massage, joint mobilisations or stretching. In severe cases surgery is required but a conservative approach is preferred where possible.
Wrist fracture

Fracture to the wrist often occurs as a result of a fall onto an outstretched hand usually breaking the radius or scaphoid bone.
It is a common injury suffered in contact sports and in the elderly.
Some wrist fractures will need surgery to realign the broken bones, however most heal with just a cast.
Once the cast has been removed treatment should focus on stretching and strengthening the muscles that have been isolated. This is a vital part of rehabilitation following any fracture.
Treatment should also aim to restore full range of movement and co-ordination.
Early rehabilitation following any fracture can make all the difference for long term success.
