Knee cartilage regrown and implanted back into patient.

This really is the future of surgery.

One of our clients, Liz Coveney, has recently become the first person outside of clinical trials to undergo this type of Surgery. The James Grigg Centres have been responsible for both the pre and post suregery rehabilitation protocols, a process that follows specific guidelines set out by mycartilagerehab.org

The surgical procedure is only 50% of the process. With the patient unable to weight bear on the affected leg for 6 weeks post surgery, the rehabilitation has to focus on not only the knee itself, but also the rest of the body that will over compensate with daily activities.

The rehab process in this case has focused on regaining mobility, strength, co-ordination and flexibility within the affected knee. Specific attention has also focused on the lower back, hips and ankles to make sure the knee has an optimum healing environment. Focusing on other areas of the body will also help when the patient makes a return to weight bearing activity.

The rehabilitation to date is going extremely well and progress is ahead of schedule!

For more information on the rehabilitation process following this type of treatment or how we maybe able to help you then please follow the contact details below.

185 mile bike ride. 26 mile row. 85 mile run. In just 5 days!

An amazing achievement.

This years sport relief challenge saw comedian John Bishop travelling from Paris to London in an epic endurance triathlon lasting 5 days. John completed his “week of hell” challenge by cycling, rowing and running a total of 290 miles and raising over 3.5 million pounds for sport relief in the process.

This really is an amazing achievement, but one that could most probably not have happened without support from key people around him. Obviously the support from his family and the general public would have been a huge psychological boost, however, the support from his medical team was also crucial.

The question we have been asked a lot since it aired has been…

What is the point of an ice bath?

During the challenge John was regularly instructed to undertake ice baths following each day’s activity.

There is a good reason for this and that is to promote healing. The theory behind this method of recovery is that the cooling of the muscle tissue will cause…

1) A constriction of blood vessels and a flushing away of waste products i.e. lactic acid

2) A slowing down in the activity of cells which helps reduce damage

3) A reduction in swelling and inflammation

Subsequently the re-warming of the tissue and increased blood flow following an ice bath will then improve the healing process. There are a lot of theories for how long to immerse muscles in an ice bath and how effective it is.

The general rule is 10 minutes but will vary with different research.

For those of you who missed it you can still download it on iTunes!

hamstring / thigh pain

Treatment of hamstring pain usually consists of joint mobilisations, deep tissue massage and rehabilitation exercises

Pain in the back of the thigh (hamstring)

Pain in the hamstring area can be due to a number
of reasons. The most common are…

Hamstring muscle tears

Referred muscle pain

Referred pain from the lower back

Hamstring tears / referred muscle pain

Tearing of the hamstring muscles is fairly common
and will often happen when the leg is out straight
in front. It usually is as a result of either
sudden acceleration, sudden deceleration, sharp
twisting movements or jumping related activities.

Treatment of hamstring muscle tears follows the
same protocols of any muscle tear…

Decrease swelling

Improve range of movement

Release tightness with sports massage

Treat any underlying causes

Re-gain strength

Re-gain felxibility

Return to activity or particular sport

Referred pain from the back (more common)

This is the more common hamstring pain we see at the James Grigg Centres. People are amazed at how the majority of pain in their hamstring area is actually all coming from the lower back and at how quickly symptoms can resolve. People often report with symptoms that include…

A feeling of tightness within the hamstring

A sharp stabbing pain into the buttock/back of thigh

Hamstring fatigue or weakness

A “dead” feeling or “heaviness”

Pins and needles

All these symptoms however, can also be present with a genuine tear to the hamstring muscle. Therefore it is important to get the correct diagnosis as soon as possible.

Treatment of referred pain is usually pretty quick. Focus is first targeted towards the lower back joints and muscle. This is a common area for where nerves can become trapped which can be the cause of the referred pain. Once the underlying cause is resolved then treatment on the hamstring muscle can commence and be much more effective.

The neck causing shoulder pain

Referred pain from the neck is extremely common. A bundle of nerves called the brachial plexus leaves the neck and travels down the shoulder into the arm and hand. These nerves have a labyrinth of muscle tissue, bone and joints to navigate around.

It is very easy for these nerves to become compressed. When this happens, pain can occur anywhere from the neck to the hand even though the actual site of compression can be elsewhere.

Symptoms of nerve compression could be

1 – Shooting pains
2 – Aching senstations
3 – Pins and needles
4 – Weakness in the muscles
5 – The arm feeling “heavy” or “dead”

Obviously shoulder pain could actually be coming from the shoulder joint itself. It is just in most cases the neck and spinal joints are responsible for the symptoms. That’s why a good assessment and treatment plan of the whole upper limb is essesnital for complete and speedy recovery. Making an accurate diagnosis is extremely important in order to make sure the right area is being treated.

Treating the neck

Treating the neck is relatively straight forward once the
cause has been established.

Applying gentle pressure to the spinal joints reduces the
pressure on the nerves around the neck. This alone can be
enough to relive the pain in the shoulder.

The use of sports massage is extremely beneficial as it
helps release the spasm and tightness surrounding the
neck and shoulder. It allows the muscles to return to
normal length and function.

Rehhabilitation exercises should focus on regaining
strength, mobility and stability in the neck, shoulder
and shoulder blade area.

It really can be a quick fix sometimes, even if the
symptoms are very painful.

For more information on how we treat and how we can
help you please contact our friendly reception team
by following the contact details below…

A video example from one of our clinics…

The following video demonstrates how a specific neck mobilisation can resolve extreme pain in the neck and also pain and restriction in the shoulder.

As demonstrated, spinal mobilisations do not need to be aggressive to be effective. What’s more, a shoulder problem may not actually be a shoulder problem at all. Referred pain is extremely common and an accurate diagnosis is fundamental in order to achieve a pain free movement. Whether there is damage to the shoulder joint or not, assessment of the neck and spinal nerves should always occur.

Ankle sprains are by far the most common and most re-occurring injury within both professional and amateur sport.

REST ALONE IS NOT THE ANSWER WITH ANKLE SPRAINS. THEY WILL OFTEN OCCUR AGAIN AND AGAIN UNTIL FIXED PROPERLY!

Tips following ankle sprain injuries…

1) Follow the RICE protocol immediately following injury and continue the
process until ALL swelling has gone. It maybe boring but it works!

2) Balancing is one of the most important exercises to conecntrate on as
soon as pain permits. We often see people who have sprained their ankles
years ago and still struggle to balance correctly.

3) Try to walk as normally as possible as soon as soon as you
are able. Concentrate on heel strike and toe-off.

4) Strenghten the calf and assoicating muscles as soon as possible.

5) Seek advice and treatment in the EARLY STAGES. It really can cut
rehab time in half if treated early!

Follow these steps and you should be back
to normal function as quickly as possible!

The James Grigg Centres are private practices specialising in injury treatment, sports massage, post-op rehabilitation and personal training.

Sports injuries make up about 50% of the injuries we treat, the rest consist of more everyday problems such as back pain, neck pain, headaches etc.

So are you a sports injury clinic?

Well yes. We have a sports injury department in both Southampton and the New Forest that specialises with the assessment and treatment of sports related injuries.

I don’t think I have a sports injury, can I still come and see you?

Of course! As already mentioned we treat both sports related injuries and non sports related injuries. If you would like more information then please feel free to contact us.

How are sports injuries treated compared to non sports injuries?

Sports injuries are usually more complex than non sports injuries. This is because sports participation places more stress on the body than sedentary lifestyle. Our sports injury clinics in Southampton and the New Forest specifically looks at why the injury has happened in the first place and assesses how the particular sport is contributing to the injury.

How do I know if I have a sports related injury?

An injury is an injury no matter whether you play sport or not and will respond with treatment. A sports injury could be classified as an injury that has directly occurred as a result of playing sport or is emerging when sport is being played.

How do you treat sports related injuries?

1. We assess the injury
2. We treat the injury
3. We understand the sport you are playing
4. We rehab the injury to your particular sport
5. We fix the injury

Our sports injury clinic in Southampton and the New Forest look at why the injury has happened. Treatment will focus initially on the symptoms of your injury to help with pain relief. It will then target the underlying cause of the injury to help prevent it from happening again.

The key from then on is to fully understand the demands of the particular sport you are participating in. Whether it be long distance running, triathlons, contact sports such as football or rugby, sports that require very fast changes of direction such as tennis or badminton. It doesn’t matter what the particular sport is, we will develop and implement a rehab programme that is specific to your needs and the demands placed upon your body through the sport you play.

Where are you based?

Our sports injury clinic in Southampton is located just 2 minutes from junction 7 on the M27.

Our sports injury clinic in the New Forest is based in Hale close to Fordingbridge and Downton.

For more information on our sports injury clinic, sports related injury, sports injury treatment or sports massage services then please contact us via our centres page by clicking here

What we do at James Grigg Centres

Injury treatment. Click here for more info

At James Grigg we diagnose and treat pain or injury that is muscular, joint or nerve related.

These include back pain, neck pain, trapped nerves, slipped discs, whiplash, ligament problems, tendon problems, sports injuries, headaches, fractures, joint replacements, muscle tears etc.

Treatment may included; joint mobilisations, sports massage, rehabilitation exercises, postural assessment and correction, deep tissue release, strengthening and stretching etc.

Sports Massage. Click here for more info

Sports massage is quite simply massage….. just better.
It works by applying deep pressure to areas of tightness
within the muscle often known as knots. These knots
cause pain at the site of the tightness within the muscle.
However, it is also common for muscular knots to cause
pain in other areas of the body that are not tight. This is
called “refereed pain”. For example, tightness in the upper
back and shoulder muscles can cause headache pain.

Sports massage will leave you feeling refreshed,
rejuvenated and relaxed. Due to the demands
of daily living and the stresses we place on our
bodies, many people put up with constant dull
aches or niggling pains. Most of these are of
muscular origin. Sports massage address’s these
issues and resolves them quickly often with
immediate effect.

Post-op rehabilitation. Click here for more info

Post-op rehabilitation is the immediate care following a surgical procedure i.e. joint replacements, ligament reconstructions, arthroscopies, debridements etc. It is considered by many as more crucial than the procedure itself.

Post-op rehabilitation focuses on regaining range of motion, strength, flexibility, co-ordination and balance to the affected area. This does not simply happen on it’s own. The nature of the operation will determine the amount of rehabilitation required. A joint replacement for example will take far longer to rehabilitate than a minor cartilage repair.

What we do at James Grigg Centres?

Running Injury Diagnosis & Treatment

Running injuries are more common than ever, as
the popularity of pounding the streets or treadmill
increases as a form of competition, social activity or
means of toning up those unused muscles.

Unfortunately many suffer with some common running
related injuries such as Achilles, calf, knee, thigh, hip
or back pain. Many beginner runners often stop after
only just taking up the activity due to pain or
discomfort. This is such a shame as most of these
injuries can be either avoided or cured.

Running / video analysis

The way we run has a significant impact on the way the body functions. A poor running technique can be the cause of many running related injuries.

For example, weakness in the buttock muscles can cause the knee to fall inwards thus increasing the strain placed on the inside of the knee. Equally, a flat foot arch can cause increased strain and eventually injury on the Achilles tendon.

Video analysis of a subject running can highlight these areas and help structure an appropriate treatment plan to treat the cause of the injury.

Achilles Tendon, Calf & Knee Pain

The most common running related injuries we
see here at the James Grigg Centres are
Achilles, calf and knee associated pain.

We regularly video our clients on the treadmill
and watch together on the big screen in slow motion
to fully understand how the lower limbs are
functioning whilst running.

Instead of just treating the symptoms, this
allows us to correct the underlying problems
when forming a structured treating plan.

The treatment plan is usually as follows…

1. Video analysis
2. Establish any biomechanical errors
3. Correct biomechanical errors
4. Mobilise stiff joints
5. Sports massage
6. Strengthening exercises
7. Re-assess for biomechanical errors
8. Pain free running!

Not everyone will need a video analysis

Running injuries are not always caused by a bad running technique and therefore video analysis may not be necessary or will provide no use when analysed.

The more running we do, the more maintenance we need. For example: a marathon runner should have regular sports massages to help recover the repetitive damage caused by training.

This individual may have a perfectly good running technique but is still getting pain. Therefore the treatment plan will differ.

So whether you run 5k, 10k, half marathons,
full marathons, triathlons or just run for fun…
if you are in pain… it can be fixed

What we do at James Grigg Centres?

Injury treatment. Click here for more info
