Lower back pain treatment in Salisbury
Low back pain is one of the most common injuries we deal with, this is how we treat it
What is lower back pain?

Lower back pain is usually categorized into either non-specific or specific back pain. Non-specific low back pain is what the majority of people suffer with, and is what we deal with the most. It is usually an episode of back pain that is not necessarily clear as to what the actual cause is. For example there is no pathological disease or particular problem such as a fracture. However, this pain can range from mild to severe.
So if there is no particular problem, why is the pain there
The majority of low back pain is due to a combination of factors. These will usually involve…
1 – Poor muscle control
2 – Stiff spinal joints
3 – Tightness in surrounding muscles
4 – Trapped nerves
5 – Muscle weakness
Assessment of the lower back will usually reveal one or more of the above factors. This is where we target our treatment.
Symptoms
Symptoms of lower back pain vary dramatically. One individual can report to the clinic with a dull aching in the lower back that gets worse with long periods of sitting. Others can report with severe shooting pain with movement. There can be pins and needles present, pain that travels into the buttocks and down the legs, a numbness sensation or pain that is only present in one particular position. It doesn’t matter from our point of view, the treatment always focuses on the problems we find during assessment.
Treatment that works
Our treatment works by targeting the causing factors. Simply taking painkillers prescribe by your GP will only mask the symptoms and create a recurrence of back pain episodes. Our approach is simple…
1 – Treat the muscle
2 – Treat the joint
3 – Treat the nerve
4 – Improve muscle control
We use this process almost every time we treat any condition, not just back pain. It is a process that tackles the underlying cause. Soft tissue massage will target tight muscles, joint mobilisations will target the stiff joints, nerve stretches will improve nerve flexibility and our rehab program targets muscle control and core stability.
Soft tissue massage – targets tight muscles
Joint mobilisations – targets stiff spinal joints
Nerve stretches – improves nerve flexibility
Rehabilitation – improves muscle control, co-ordination and strengthThe result is a pain-free lower back
Our treatment approach to non-specific lower back pain regularly sees long lasting results with our clients and sets us apart from other clinics.
Specific low back pain
Specific low back pain examples include osteoarthritis of the spine, tumours, infections, diseases.
